ArcelorMittal plans to lay off approximately 400 workers in Indiana Harbor’s Long Harbor facility in the next few months as slumping demand for steel continues to hit the steel industry hard.
The long carbon facility produces bars used primarily in heavy equipment and automobile manufacturing, which is also suffering due to the worldwide recession.
United Steelworkers District 7 Director Jim Robinson said employees that could be affected are both union and nonunion, and layoffs would likely begin in 60 days. (Post Tribune)
